SUMMARY:Vortrag von Dr. Alexandra Sakaki: "Japan’s Zeitenwende in Security Policy"
DESCRIPTION:The Russian invasion of Ukraine elicited what is widely seen as a ‘Zeitenwende’ in security policy not only in Germany\, but also in Japan – despite the country’s geographical distance from the war. Over the next few years\, Tokyo plans to massively increase its defense spending and acquire new military capabilities such as medium-range missiles. \nDoes this signify Japan’s turn away from its anti-militarist (or even pacifist) stance in security policy and its image as a civilian power since 1945? The lecture will discuss the background\, implementation steps and the implications of Japan’s ‘Zeitenwende’. \nSince January 2012\, Alexandra Sakaki has been a part of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). From January to April 2019\, she served as a visiting scholar at the National Defense Academy Japan and Keio University. From 2012 to 2017\, she was a Senior Fellow at the Robert Bosch Foundation\, focusing on ‚Japan in the International System‘. Prior to that\, she worked as a research associate at the Institute for East Asian Studies\, University of Duisburg-Essen from 2009 to 2011. In 2011\, she earned her Ph.D. (Dr. phil.) in Political Science from the University of Trier. She has also held teaching positions at the University of Trier and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 2008 to 2009. Her academic career includes a research stay at the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo from 2007 to 2008. She holds a Master’s degree (M. Phil.) in International Relations from the University of Cambridge\, England\, obtained in 2005\, and a Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in East Asian Studies from Princeton University\, USA\, obtained in 2002. Before embarking on her academic journey\, she worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Co. in Munich from 2002 to 2004. \nThe event will take place in hybrid form! \nLocation: LMU Japan-Center\, Oettingenstraße 67\, Room L155 \nAttend the lecture via Zoom: https://lmu-munich.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/u5EpcuqppjgrH9TwDBAYFPfvOL5–eohw2Ye \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with information about your participation in the meeting. \nWeitere Informationen erhalten Sie auf unserer Homepage. \nWir würden uns freuen\, Sie zu diesem Vortrag begrüßen zu dürfen.
