SUMMARY:Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Cornelia Reiher: "(In)visible newcomers in Japan’s Transnational Countryside"
November 2026: 18:15 – 19:45 Uhr  \nRural Japan has long faced population decline\, aging\, and persistent labor shortages. In response\, Japan’s central and local governments increasingly seek to attract newcomers\, including international migrants. Yet while the number of foreign residents in rural areas is growing\, their presence and contributions often remain (in)visible. This paper explores how different temporalities of migration shape migrants’ (in)visibility and their experiences of living\, belonging\, and contributing to rural Japan. Drawing on ethnographic research in rural Kyūshū\, the paper compares migrants whose stays range from several months to several decades\, including foreign workers\, exchange and artist-in-residence participants\, marriage migrants\, and entrepreneurs from Europe\, North America\, and Australia. It examines how the duration and conditions of their stay affect their (in)visibility\, relationships with local communities\, and their ability to imagine a future in Japan’s countryside. I argue that migrants’ (in)visibility are shaped by their temporal positions\, migration regimes\, local institutions\, and unequal access to resources. While some newcomers remain largely invisible within local imaginaries of rural revitalization\, others become increasingly embedded in rural communities. A temporal perspective thus reveals how (in)visibility\, belonging\, and contributions to rural futures are interrelated and negotiated over time. \nCornelia Reiher is professor of Japanese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. Her research focuses on rural Japan\, migration\, digitalization\, culinary globalization and food politics. Her recent publications in journals like Food\, Culture and Society\, Mobilities\, and Rural Studies analyze Japanese migrants in Berlin\, as well as lifestyle migrants and migrant workers in rural Japan. Cornelia recently edited the volume Lived experiences of crisis in rural Japan: An anthology on the transformation of communities and migration during the COVID-19 pandemic (2024). She is also the editor of two blogs\, one on Japanese cuisine in Berlin and one on urban-rural migration in Japan. \nDer Vortrag findet in Präsenz statt. Ort: Japan-Zentrum der LMU\, Seminargebäude am Englischen Garten\, Oettingenstr. 67\, 80538 München\, Raum 151. Eine vorherige Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich.

SUMMARY:Vortrag von Dr. Raffaele Pernice: "Glimpse of the Future in a Changing Nation. Japan and the Osaka International Expos 1970 and 2025."
DESCRIPTION:Das Japan-Zentrum der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München lädt Sie im Rahmen des Forschungskolloquiums im Wintersemester 2026/27 zu folgendem Gastvortrag herzlich ein: \nGlimpse of the Future in a Changing Nation.\nJapan and the Osaka International Expos 1970 and 2025. \nDr. Raffaele Pernice (University of New South Wales\, Sydney\, Australia) \n26. November 2026: 18:15 – 19:45 Uhr \nJapan has traditionally been regarded by architects and planners as a living laboratory\, a country that has often anticipated\, and refined\, futuristic visions of cities and an unstoppable urban change. For decades\, technology\, alongside a persistent discourse on the value of local traditional cultural and social structures\, has catalysed the country’s design creativity\, fostering the imagination of Japanese architects\, designers\, engineers\, and planners to pursue innovative concepts and propose bold urban projects. Paradigm shifts in architectural practice and urban design theory are especially visible in the experimental projects and urban visions presented at the Osaka World Expositions of 1970 and 2025\, which together reflect the radical transformations in the built environment\, design aspirations\, technological development\, and pressing social and environmental concerns that emerged across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Japan and globally. \nThis presentation will outline the key drivers of the evolution of the built environment\, urban ideas\, architectural forms\, and planning strategies in Japan since the postwar period\, and how they have progressively responded to external economic\, social\, and cultural forces\, and in the context of increasingly urgent environmental concerns. \nRaffaele Pernice is an Italian architect and Senior Lecturer in the School of Built Environment at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) in Australia. He holds a PhD in Architecture from Waseda University in Tokyo\, and a Master of Architecture degree from IUAV University of Venice\, in Italy. From 2007 to 2009 he was a JSPS post-doc research fellow at Graduate School of Engineering and Design of Hosei University in Tokyo\, where he further expanded his studies on modern Japanese architectural history and urban planning and design theories. \nDr. Pernice research interests and activities range from practice to theory and history of architecture and city planning and urban design\, with particular attention to the transformation and urban development of the cities of Japan and the urbanism of the Asian Pacific region. His research has been supported with scholarships and grants from academic and international institutions\, such as the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT)\, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE)\, the Japan Foundation\, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)\, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)\, among others. \nHe is editor of Waterfront Regeneration in a Time of Climate Change: Recent Japanese and International Experiences (Routledge 2025) and The Urbanism of Metabolism. Visions\, Scenarios and Models for the Mutant City of Tomorrow (Routledge 2022). \nDer Vortrag findet in Präsenz statt. Ort: Japan-Zentrum der LMU\, Seminargebäude am Englischen Garten\, Oettingenstr. 67\, 80538 München\, Raum 151. Eine vorherige Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich. \n© Foto Raffaele Pernice
