Date: January 15, 2021 (Sat)
Time: 9 am to 1 pm (Germany) / 5 pm to 9 pm (Japan) (including a break)
Place: Zoom
Aim: Have you ever wondered about how researchers find answers to their research questions? How do they look at data and come to conclusions in their texts and presentations? Are you a graduate student who wonders about how to deal with tons of qualitative empirical data material? Then come and join us for our interactive workshop on how to analyze qualitative empirical data! The languages used in the workshop will be English and Japanese.
In this workshop, we introduce students to qualitative content analysis and offer the chance to work with material from three different research fields: qualitative network analysis, identity construction, and critical discourse analysis. We work hands-on with real data material, gathered during field work of the three workshop leaders in Japan: Isabel Fassbender (DWC), Ludgera Lewerich (HHU), Anna Wiemann (LMU).
Participants: Students from the Japanese Studies programs at Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and from the Department of International Studies at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts Kyoto.
Overview of the workshop program: Before the workshop, students will do some preparative reading on qualitative content analysis in general. The workshop itself starts with initial work on the concept of qualitative content analysis and reflection on the method. We then separate into German-Japanese mixed thematic sessions and practice with raw data. Students may choose which session to join:
- Power/knowledge in the Japanese discourse on ‘ninkatsu’ (Isabel Fassbender),
- Identity construction of Zainichi Koreans (Ludgera Lewerich),
- Networks and relationships in the Japanese anti-nuclear movement after Fukushima (Anna Wiemann)
Registration: Please register for this workshop until January 10, 2022!
- LMU students at a.wiemann@lmu.de
- DWC students at ifassben@dwc.doshisha.ac.jp
Please indicate which of the thematic sessions you would like to attend. After registration you will receive the preparatory text together with the Zoom link to the workshop.
