Gabriele Vogt recently contributed a chapter to the online handbook on global migration and integration, hosted by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb) / Federal Agency for Civic Education. The chapter is entitled „Japan tentatively opens its doors to international care workers“, and provides a short introduction into the basic setting and into the most recent developments regarding international caregiver migration to Japan.
Gabriele Vogt concludes that: (a) the field is diversifying and is quite dynamic at the moment with the numbers of international caregivers in Japan on the rise; however, (b) the overall scale of newly incoming personnel is too small, and personnel retention too weak if caregiver migrants were to substantially compensate for the shortage of skilled labor in the sector.
The chapter is available in both English and German.
